Manson & Utley ,Inc.

Manson & Utley, Inc. based in Richmond, VA, is celebrating its 90th year of service to the interior construction industry.

Manson & Utley, Inc. was founded as Manson & Suter on April l5, l9l5, by Sydney Lynn Manson and Mr. Suter, specializing and installing stamped metal ceilings, which were used in most all large retail outlets, such as Woolworth's, Sear's Roebuck, Safeway and Winn Dixie. Metal ceilings were the main source of business from l9l5 to approximately l930.

The company became Manson & Smith, Inc. in approximately l930 and Mr. E. F. Utley joined the organization as a bookkeeper. Utley also introduced the company to metal weather stripping and screens.

Jarvis H. Tolson, who was a competitor in Richmond joined Manson & Utley in l960 and was solely in charge of the department installing weather stripping, screens and storm windows.

Sydney Lynn Manson died in l957 and William A. Manson, Sr., was made president and Mr. Utley was then made vice president

Charles F. Pietsch managed branch offices in Norfolk, Virginia and Charlottesville, Virginia from l960 until l980. Manson & Utley also had an office in Lynchburg, VA for a brief period of time.

Presently, Manson & Utley has one office in Richmond, Virginia that covers work throughout the State. William A. Manson, Jr. is now president of the company and Bill, Sr. is trying to retire shortly, having passed the 80 year mile marker.

Manson & Utley is concentrating on acoustical ceiling installations and acoustical engineering of all types. The company is also installing raised access flooring, ceramic tile, specialty ceilings, acoustical wall panels, and resilient flooring of all types. Bill Manson, Sr. has been a registered acoustical engineer, P.E., since l972 and has been expanding his engineering services considerably.

Manson & Utley has performed installations of acoustical ceilings, resilient floors and acoustical panels on many project throughout Virginia. The company has performed work on many schools, bank buildings and college buildings of all types. Manson & Utley has received many awards over the years from manufacturers for both volume and quality of the outstanding projects installed.
